A quick guide to your 3-bin council waste system

If your local council provides a three-bin waste system and you’re getting a bit confused about what goes into your FOGO or GO bin, read on!

May 5, 2022

FOGO stands for ‘Food Organics, Garden Organics’. The 3-bin FOGO and GO systems–consisting of new 240L lime-green lidded bin (collected weekly) and a 120L red general waste bin (collected fortnightly), plus the existing yellow recycling waste bin – started its roll out in the Perth Metropolitan area in 2019. The WA State Government is encouraging the introduction of a 3-bin FOGO system throughout all local governments in the Perth and Peel regions by 2025.

3-bin FOGO

The FOGO system provides residents with more options for separating their waste with the aim to improve recovery rates, increase diversion from landfill and reduce costs of processing material. Organic waste diverted from landfill means less production of harmful greenhouse gas methane.

Food and garden organic waste in the FOGO bin is collected by waste trucks, pre-processed (to remove contamination) and then made into high-quality compost.

This new, lime-green lidded bin allows households to recycle both garden waste and kitchen waste, along with general waste and co-mingled recycling.

If it didn’t live or grow, it’s not FOGO!

Only food, garden waste, paper products and council supplied compostable liners go into your FOGO bin.

This includes:

  • Bread & dairy
  • Fruit & vegetables
  • Meat, bones & seafood (tip: in warm weather you may want to store this waste in your freezer until the day before your scheduled collection, to reduce smells!)
  • Prunings & leaves
  • Dog poo, kitty litter, paper towel, napkins & tissues

Large branches and logs are not suitable for the FOGO bin and should put out for your local council’s organics verge collection.

This does not include:

  • Clothes or textiles
  • Materials in bags
  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Aerosol cans or gas bottles
  • Batteries or electronic waste

3-bin GO

Some councils provide three bins, but the lime-green lid is a GO bin. GO stands for Garden Organics.

All organic waste grown in your garden can be placed in this bin. The contents of this bin are then mulched.

This includes:

  • Grass clippings
  • Palm Fronds
  • Prunings, cuttings & trimmings
  • Tree nuts
  • Twigs and sticks

Large branches and logs are not suitable for the GO bin and should put out for your local council’s organics verge collection.

This does not include:

  • Construction, demolition & building materials
  • Dog poo or kitty litter
  • Food waste
  • Hazardous waste
  • Plastic bags
  • Recyclables
