4 signs you may have a gas leak

A gas leak can be much harder to spot than a water leak, but there are signs to watch out for.

  1. Before it’s piped to domestic consumers, an odorant is added to natural gas to make it easier to detect if there’s a leak. It’s often described as a rotten egg or cabbage smell.
  2. Leaking gas from a small opening may cause a hissing noise.
  3. If the cost of your gas bill has suddenly jumped (and you haven’t been using more than usual) it could be a sign there is a slow gas leak.
  4. A yellow, orange or red gas flame colour on your gas appliances means there could be a fault or a gas leak. It could also mean your gas burners need a clean so check those too.

If you suspect you have a gas leak in your home, you should open the windows and call your local gas plumber straight away.
