Squeaky timber floorboards are very annoying, especially when you are trying to be quiet. Reasons can include:

• Movement between the floorboards and the joists below.
• Boards rubbing against each other.
• Missing nails or screws that are used to hold the floorboards in place.
• Poorly-fitted boards or boards that weren’t fixed down properly when installed.

1. If you have access to the underside of your floorboards you can buy some wedge spaces from your local hardware store and try hammering them between the loose floorboards and joists.

2. If you have one or two isolated squeaky spots, try brushing a little baby powder between the boards - it may lubricate the sides of the boards sufficiently to stop the squeak.

If this doesn’t solve the problem, or the squeaks are more widespread, you could have a bigger problem on your hands.

Sometimes squeaking is caused by the sub-floor timber framework, which supports the flooring and for this, it’s best to contact your local, experienced carpenter. They will take a look, diagnose the issue and fix it properly.
