- First, plan plenty of storage. Make sure you have room for everything, so your bench space isn’t full of bottles and appliances. Clutter will make it difficult to clean.
- Ventilation is also very important, so make sure the exhaust fan is powerful enough to remove any moisture, which will help to prevent mould and mildew.
- Go for smooth surfaces on your floors and walls – which means avoiding anything with texture (texture will be a haven for grime).
- Avoid narrow, difficult-to-reach spots and any nooks and crannies where mould and stains can lurk.
- Consider a wall mounted vanity. This keeps your floor clear for easy cleaning and avoids water damaged edges where cabinets meet the floor.
- That annoying space just behind the toilet is very difficult to reach (and let’s face it, who wants to get that close to a loo to clean!). Install a ‘back to wall’ toilet which sits up against the wall with no gaps and no fiddly spaces underneath.
- Choose simple tapware which will only need a quick wipe over – having them wall mounted also makes cleaning easier.
- Basins built into the countertop are easier to clean than raised styles.
- If you have always wanted a free-standing bath, think carefully. They are stylish but difficult to clean around if they are placed close to a wall. If your renovation space is small, opt for a built-in bath in a corner or against a wall.
