Winter is coming: Is your roof ready?

As winter approaches, it's always a good idea to make sure that any problems with your tiled roof are fixed. Here's why.

May 8, 2024

Water damage

Roof tiles can crack, shift, or become loose over time letting water seep through during winter rains and storms.

Structural damage

Water can sneak in and weaken the structural integrity of your roof. This could lead to costly repairs and also pose safety risks. Regular inspections and maintenance can catch issues like sagging or buckling, often caused by prolonged moisture exposure, before they become serious.

Mould and lichen growth

Humidity and moisture are mould and lichen’s best friend, which can cause roofing materials to deteriorate over time. These organisms feed on the minerals in roof tiles, weakening them and making them more brittle and likely to break.

What does a roof leak look like?

A leaking roof doesn’t always mean water streaming down your walls or dripping through the ceiling.

  • Look out for the appearance of damp spots or small patches of mould. If you happen to notice mould or damp spots on your ceiling outside of wet areas like the bathroom or laundry, this could be a sign your roof has a leak.
  • A water stain may look like a large puddle on the ceiling, often ringed with brown. However, some smaller stains could also be a sign of a much larger roof leak.

On the flip side – a well maintained roof can:

Avoid costly repairs

Addressing minor problems as they pop up can be cost-effective in the long run. Small issues like a cracked tile or a missing shingle are much less expensive to fix immediately than waiting until they turn into more significant problems.

Reduce health risks

Damp and leakage not only damage the structure of your home but can also lead to mould and mildew growth, which are health hazards. These fungi thrive in moist environments, often resulting from water entering through damaged roofs. By fixing any minor roof issues before the rainy season, you can reduce the risk of mould growth and maintain a healthier home environment.

Improve energy efficiency

A well-maintained roof provides better insulation, keeping your home warmer during the cold months and reducing heating costs.

Hold property value

A well-maintained roof enhances the aesthetic appeal and value of your home. Issues like faded or visibly damaged tiles can lower the resale value of your property.

Improve safety

Loose or damaged tiles can be hazardous, especially in stormy weather when they might dislodge and fall, posing a risk to safety.
