How to avoid a blocked kitchen sink

We’ve all had a blocked sink at some stage. Here’s how to avoid another one.

February 18, 2021
  • Use a plug strainer and dispose of anything collected in it, in the bin.
  • Don’t pour oil or fats down the sink. Wait for them to cool and solidify and then dispose of in the bin.
  • Don’t wash food waste down the drain. Foods that are tiny but expand or congeal in water are common blockage culprits and include: cereals, rice, pasta, diced vegetables, tea leaves and coffee grounds.
  • Scrape all food remnants from dishes before you put them in the dishwasher as it can prevent a blockage down the line.
