How to avoid cracked heels this summer

Summer is on its way, but with it come the dreaded cracked heels. Here are some helpful tips to avoid them and put your best foot (or heel) forward!

September 9, 2021

Don’t let sore, unattractive cracked heels stop you from wearing your favourite summer shoes.

What causes cracked heels?

When the skin around the heel becomes dry, it often begins to split.

This can be caused by:

  • Being on your feet for long periods.
  • Wearing hard, unsupportive footwear like thongs and open-backed sandals and shoes.
  • Walking in bare feet.
  • Taking long, hot showers.
  • Age – our skin can lose moisture as we get older.
  • Sun exposure can make your feet prone to dryness.

Preventing cracked heels

  • Make sure your feet stay well moisturised.
  • Wear supportive footwear with an enclosed heel.
  • Don’t walk barefoot particularly on hot surfaces!
  • Wear stockings or socks when possible.
  • Make sure you stay well hydrated.
  • Soaking your feet regularly in lukewarm water can help to keep the skin on your feet soft and smooth. This gives enough warmth to soften the skin, without making your skin too soft.
  • Exfoliating your feet is a simple way to get rid of the dead skin around your feet. A pumice stone is ideal.
  • Try to avoid foot care products with alcohol in them as they can dry out your skin.
