Give your disposable razors a second life

Every year in Australia, an estimated 100 million disposable razors end up in landfill. So, how can you avoid being part of this massive problem? Read on.

July 8, 2021

The best thing to do is switch to a stainless-steel, electric, or battery-operated razor. This is great for the environment and much more cost-effective.

But there is good news for those who simply cannot give up their disposable razors.

Gillette and TerraCycle have partnered to make all brands of razors and their packaging nationally recyclable for free.

Accepted items

Any brand of used razor blades and their packaging, including:

  • All brands of razor blades and razors (refillable and disposable products, and replaceable-blade cartridge units)
  • Rigid plastic packaging
  • Flexible plastic packaging

Please note:

Cardboard and paper packaging is recyclable through regular council recycling. Please do not include these in your collections for this program.

How to recycle

You can find a Community Collection Hub at:

www.terracyclemap.com

Go to the site, enter your postcode and on the waste stream drop down box, choose razor blades and packaging. A list of Community Collection Hubs will appear.

Become a Community Collection Hub

If you can't find anything near you, you can also register to become a Community Collection Hub.

·       Once active in the program, a collection box will be shipped to the address in your TerraCycle profile.

·       When your box arrives you can set up your recycling station.

·       The address listed in your TerraCycle account will be posted on the publicly available Community Collection Hubs map.

·       Individuals in your area will use your location to drop off their used razor blades and packaging.

·       When you're read to ship, empty the contents of your Gillette box into another empty cardboard box.

·       Download a free shipping label from your TerraCycle profile, attach it to your box of waste and take it to Australia Post.

Collect as a private location

You also have the option to register as a private location (if you don't want people coming to your premises or residence). You could collect on your own or with your friends and family, school or workplace.

·       When you are ready to ship your collected razors, head to your profile to download a free shipping label.

·       Attach your shipping label to your package and take it to Australia Post.

To sign up for either option go to:

Postage is free.

Important

Due to the nature of the waste, it is required that all packages shipped through this program adhere to the following regulations:

  • Waste must be packed in a strong and sturdy cardboard box. Please do not use bags, sachets, flimsy cardboard boxes or the packaging your razors were sold in.
  • No other type of blade or sharp is accepted through this program - razors and their packaging only.
  • Please be cautious of where you store your collection box, keeping it away from children and pets.
