Bristles come in three main types: soft, medium and hard. Dentists tend to recommend soft bristles, as they are gentler on teeth enamel and also easier on gums, helping to avoid receding gums.
Toothbrush bristles also come in different shapes and lengths, including flat, domed or rippled. Domed and rounded bristles are gentler on your teeth but still remove plaque and residue from your teeth.
Toothbrush size can also make a difference. Larger heads may look like they would do a better job of cleaning, but smaller toothbrush heads can reach your molars more easily, resulting in a better clean.
While the handle of your brush doesn’t affect teeth cleaning itself, if it’s uncomfortable or difficult to hold, brushing could be cut short.
Whichever toothbrush you choose, you should change it every three months. After this, the bristles begin to fray and become less effective when cleaning.
