You will need:
- Empty jars and lids with the labels removed: These could be from preserves, pickles or any empty mason-style jars you have lying around.
- Ornaments to put into the jars – mini fake Christmas trees, decorations etc. Just make sure they are waterproof.
- Glycerin (available at supermarkets)
- Waterproof glue (we used a glue gun)
- White, silver, gold or coloured glitter (chunkier glitter works best. Don’t use fine glitter as it will clump together)
- Paint for the jar lids (optional)
- Distilled water
Method
- Take the lids off the jars and turn them upside down.
- Carefully place your ornament on the inside of the lid and glue it down.
- Add approximately 2 teaspoons of glitter each jar, depending on its size.
- Fill with distilled water and add glycerine. Start with a few drops until you’re happy with the consistency. – this helps to suspend the glitter in the water, creating that magical snow-like effect.
- When you are ready to add the lid and ornament to the jar, sit it in the sink or in a bowl so that any overflow doesn’t make a mess. It is better to fill the water to the top and have the excess spill out when you put the lid on; this means there won’t be a space at the top of your snow globe because the jar is not completely filled with water.
- Screw the lid on tightly and give it a good shake!
Here are 4 more ideas for things to add to your snow globe
- Glue white gravel to the inside of the lid to look like snow. Make sure you leave room around the edge for the lid to screw onto the jar.
- Laminate a photo and give the snow globe as a gift for grandparents
- Add Lego characters – it doesn’t have to be something Christmassy!
- Make your own figures from polymer resin clay (available at craft shops).
